My name is Max Hitchins. I am known as MelbourneCupMax. This is possibly because I have memorised the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place-getters for the last 100 Melbourne Cups.

Many media people call me MelbourneCupMax or Mr Melbourne Cup. For me the Melbourne Cup is a 365 day commitment.

Since 1987 (long before the Internet era exploded on the scene) I have been providing a service to subscribers interested in the Melbourne Cup. My original format was what I called my 'six horse field' system. My plan was to reduce the field from 24 horses down to the 6 horses I considered had the best chance of winning the Melbourne Cup that year. Then I was spending around 150/200 hours a year on Cup research. (Now, with the influx of the International horses I spend in excess of 400 hours each year in Cup research).

My recommendation was to have a small each way bet on each of these six horses and you should then be able to say "I backed the winner of the Melbourne Cup!" Throughout the year I follow national and international races, horses, research articles, talk to owners, trainers and media experts. I study breeding, watch live races and videos from all around the world. I like to think I do everything other than 'talk' to the horses!

We have had enormous success with this 'six horse field' system as it has 'worked' for 27 out of the last 34 years. I have to say it was easier task in the 'earlier years' when the only 'International' horses in the field were from New Zealand. Ummmmm.

'Cup of coffee' bet system has had amazing successes in just three years

In 2020 I introduced my 'cup of coffee' bet system to our subscribers. As told then, my plan was to identify horses who were being quoted, during the year, at high prices in the Melbourne Cup Futures Markets. My research helped me ascertain the horses most likely to run in the upcoming Melbourne Cup. As well, I accessed if they had a reasonable chance of winning or at least running a place in the upcoming Melbourne Cup.

If you followed my ‘cup of coffee’ bet system in 2020 you would have backed the Cup winner Twilight Payment at $67. See:

sportsbet incentiviseIf you followed my ‘cup of coffee’ bet system in 2021 you would have backed the 2nd place getter Incentivise at $51 and 3rd place getter Spanish Mission at $31. As well, if you backed Incentivise with Sportsbet you would have had a HUGE win. Sportsbet ‘paid out’ two weeks before the Cup was run! They regarded Incentivise as a ‘certainty’ to win 2021 Melbourne Cup. He was the shortest priced favourite since Phar Lap in 1930. See:

cup of coffee betIf you followed my advice in having ‘cup of coffee’ bets during 2022, you would have backed Emissary (2rd in the 2022 Cup) at $101 and High Emocean (3rd in the 2022 Cup) at $151. See:

BREAKING NEWS: My last Melbourne Cup analysis will be in 2023.

In February I sent an email to my long, loyal and lucky subscribers and broke this retirement news to them. I wrote: "I intend to ‘retire’ after the Melbourne Cup on the 7th of November 2023. However, between now and Cup Day 2023, on the 7th of November, I want to share with you as many racing secrets, tips, tonics, track talk and opportunities as I possibly can." I would like to pass onto YOU, via regular emails, as much information about about my format in finding searching for these ‘cup of coffee’ bets during the year. Then, you may choose to follow this format for next 35 years...without my assistance."

There are NO CHARGES or FEES for this additional service. I regard it as a 'thank you' to my subscribers over many years. I invited them to order their copy of "How To Pick The Winner Of The 2023 Melbourne Cup" against waiting until just prior to the Cup on the 7th of November.

On Saturday (26/8/23) prior to the running of The Ebor Handicap in York in the UK I wrote to our Cup of Coffee database saying: “It will be a great race to watch. It is a big field and it will be a hard race to win. The winner gets an (automatic entry via a 'Golden Ticket from VRC) into the 2023 Melbourne Cup. (And even then there is no guarantee the winner will travel to Australia to run in our Melbourne Cup.)”

I continued "Absurde ran a 'very impressive' 2nd to Vauban in his 7 length runaway win at Ascot on 20/6 (Scriptwriter was 7th). See:"

“I went searching and found an overnight article about Willie Mullins and the possibility of Absurde running in the Melbourne Cup…if he wins The Ebor tonight.”

“So, I went searching again and noticed SportsBet have Absurde at $101 in their Melbourne Cup Futures Market.”

After the running of 'The Ebor', on Sunday 27th August 2023, I wrote again to our ‘Cup Of Coffee’ database:

“WOW! What a race and what a win for 'cup of coffee' club members and ABSURDE in The Ebor at York in the UK. It is a really interesting race to watch. Note: Absurde began from the widest (worst) barrier and was three wide most of the way! In case you missed the race or want to watch it again click here:

Note: Absurde is now $21 in the Melbourne Cup Futures markets.

Another Cup long shot: ASHRUN

On the 25/10/23 prior to the running of the Geelong Cup I wrote this to our 'cup of coffee' club database: "After having one more look at Ashrun's run in the Bart Cummings on the 30th of September (See: ... I had a 'cup of coffee' bet on ASHRUN in the Melbourne Cup Futures Market at $101." (Ashrun's 2nd in the Geelong Cup got him into the 2023 Melbourne Cup. With 5 days to the Cup his price is now $34.

And another Cup long shot: MORE FELONS

More Felons had a superb run (when he ran 6th) in the Geelong Cup. Watch the race Note: More Felons Is at the end of the field for most of the way. On the turn into the straight, he is 8 wide and the jockey is wearing green sleeves with a red cap. Again I suggested another cup of coffee bet on More Felons at $51. With 5 days to go to Cup Day More Felons in now $21.00.

Immediately after the various 'wins' mentioned above I received these replies:

Chas from Wilson in WA wrote:

"Max...It’s absolutely ‘absurd' that 72 days out from the 2023 Melbourne Cup, thanks to you, many of us in the 'cup of coffee' club are sitting on 100/1 tickets on a horse named Absurde that has to be considered a 'serious chance' of winning or at least running a place in the Melbourne Cup."

Gerry from South Perth - WA - wrote:

“Brilliant stuff Max. LUNAR FLARE was my bet of the day as White Marlin was untried at the trip. I thought the relative odds were way out. Looked the winner on the bend and wow didn’t she smash them! Keep up the good work! Cheers, Gerry.

Lesley from Capalaba - QLD - wrote:

"WOW Max. Thanks for your email about LUNAR FLARE. I got $51 about her in the Melbourne Cup. I see Sportsbet now has her at $7.00 to win the Cup. I also had an excellent win on her today. All in all you and Lunar Flare made my day! Thanks Max. I look forward to receiving your cup of coffee emails."

Fordy from Melbourne - VIC - wrote:

You’ve done it again, Max! Because of you I am already on Goldman at $41 in the 2023 Melbourne Cup. And today I won on LUNAR FLARE and I also have her running for me in the Melbourne Cup at $51. Coffee tasted great today and I’m sure will taste even better in November!

My goal is to have 6 horses running for me in each Melbourne Cup…for no outlay or, perhaps better worded, a ‘CANT LOSE’ situation! We are certainly well on the way to achieving this again in 2023 with our 'cup of coffee' bet horses.

I’ll be including a section in How To Pick The Winner Of The 2023 Melbourne Cup eBook about how to ‘lay-off’ bets in order to achieve this.

My total focus is just one race - the Melbourne Cup. My Dad, a bookmaker from the North Western NSW town of Moree, used to say "Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted!" Now I guess I'm lucky, because I only have one race that consumes my interest. All the media experts have at least 7 races a day, 7 days a week in which they are expected to know the form of every horse. That's a tough gig!
